Pauline Flynn Riband showing in Damer House Gallery Roscrea

The current exhibition on display in Damer House Gallery is by the visual artist and poet Pauline Flynn. The exhibition is entitled Riband and the suite of paintings were inspired by a few military medal ribbons which Pauline saw in the Limerick Museum back in 2019.  Over time, and through a process of investigation, the artist settled on five shapes – circle, oval, pentagon, trapezoid and hexagon. These shapes are referenced throughout the paintings in this exhibition and so far, the artist have not worked outside of these constraints. While working with those shapes and a fixed size canvas, they evolved into a set of modular components that work alone or arranged together.

Pauline Flynn Riband showing in Damer House Gallery Roscrea Pauline studied at the National College of Art & Design, University College Dublin, the Art Institute of Chicago and Kyoto University of Arts, 1987/91. She graduated from NCAD in Fine Art Sculpture/History of Art, but it was in Japan she began to paint. She has worked as a professional artist since 1985 and has exhibited in Ireland, United Kingdom, Japan and China.  She lectured part-time at NCAD for twenty years and works out of her studio in Co. Wicklow where she lives. In 2008 she took a break from visual art to pursue an MA in Creative Writing at UCD.  It was there that she began to write poetry and is published in various literary journals in Ireland, UK and USA.  Her MA poetry collection was shortlisted for the Patrick Kavanagh Award in 2010 with a special recommendation. She says that “I see words as a new medium that allows me to explore imagery in a more figurative way than does the practice of abstract painting. They complement each other.”

The exhibition will be formally launched on Saturday 2nd. September at 3pm and the artist will discuss her work and read some of her poetry.  All are welcome to attend. The exhibition is open Tuesday – Sunday 11am – 5.30pm until 30 September
