Martin Bracken from Clara is the 2016 Offaly Carer of the Year

The 2016 Offaly Carer of the Year was awarded to Martin Bracken from Clara. Lisa Weldon Family Carers Ireland (FCI), presented Martin with his very deserving certificate at a special ceremony held in his honour at Town House, High St., Tullamore on 2nd November.

Martin provides full time care for his wife Breda who has Lewy Body Parkinsons. Prior to Breda’s diagnosis, she looked after everything in the home, cooking, cleaning, etc. Martin has had to take on this role as well as caring for Breda, who has an extensive medication regime. Martin uses his mobile phone to set alarms to remind him to give Breda her medication.

Commenting, Lisa Weldon, FCI Area Manager said, “We are absolutely delighted that Martin Bracken has been awarded Offaly Carer of the Year 2016. Martin is a truly remarkable person, who provides much love and care to his wife Breda.”

Ms Weldon concluded, “Carers play an absolutely vital role in society, and they are at times the forgotten workforce. The Carers of the Year Awards, present an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and support carers provide to their loved ones every day throughout the year.”

All entries into the Carers of the Year Awards receive a commemorative certificate and the Offaly Carer of the Year 2016, Martin Bracken, will now attend a special ceremony which will be held in Dublin on November 16th honouring award recipients from across the country. One family carer will be chosen as Ireland’s Carer of the Year 2016. This is the tenth year of the awards ceremony, and for the first time, there will be four regional Young Carers of the Year Awards. 2015 saw a 400% increase in nominations for Young Carer of the Year.
