Na Fianna GAA Club Notes

MINOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIOSHIP FINAL

After the bitter disappointment of losing both the U14 and U16 Championship Football Finals the mantle fell to the Na Fianna Minor Footballers to claim some silverware for the club and they duly obliged as they finally got the better of Rhode at the second attempt to capture the Minor B Football Championship Title in the Final Replay last Sunday morning in Cappincur on a scoreline of 2-08 to 1-06. Unlike the first day this time it was Rhode who hit the ground running getting the start they wanted as with their first attack they took full advantage of a mixup in the Na Fianna back line to open the scoring with a goal inside the first min and added the first point moments later. David Buckley finally got Na Fianna off the mark with their first 2 points on 10 & 14 mins and Cathal Curran added another on 18 mins to reduce the deficit to the minimum but Rhode responded with a pointed free. Both sides then added 2 more points apiece in the remaining mins of the half with the Na Fianna scores coming from placed balls from Shane Dolan and Dylan Hyland and so at the break Rhode led by two 1-04 to 0-05 which they increased to 3 with the first point of the second half. Na Fianna started the comeback with Dylan Hyland’s pointed free on 6 mins, then on 11 mins Na Fianna struck their first goal to take the lead for the first time when Dylan Hyland’s shot from 45m line was caught by Kevin Kinahan on the end line who passed it across to David Buckley in the square and he blasted it past the keeper into the net. A point apiece from Shane Dolan and Dylan Hyland midway through the half put Na Fianna 3 ahead. Rhode came back with their 2nd and what would prove to be their last point of the half and then had 3 chances to score goals but 2 great saves by Na Fianna keeper James Boland and a block down by full back Clint Horan denied them. Then 2 mins into stoppage time Na Fianna wrapped it up when Liam Langton picked up the ball about 30m out and ran in to the square where his first shot was saved but not to be denied he took the follow up and blasted it to the net. Ref John O’Reilly then blew the final whistle and amid great scenes of celebration Coiste na Nog Chairman and proud fellow Na Fianna club man Pauric Pierce was on hand to congratulate and present the cup to Na Fianna captain James Lalor.
