Auditions, Zoe’s Audition

A heart-warming, comically uplifting tale of self-realization featuring a lovable underdog Zoe, a backstage worker who dreams of landing an acting job.  Her daft, over-the-hill agent sends her on an assortment of wacky auditions ranging from “Riverdance” to “Spiderman” to being shot of cannon for a touring circus.  As she gets farther and farther from her dream job, Zoe might just be getting closer to herself.  “Be yourself, everyone else is taken,” quote Oscar Wilde. Birr Film Club – “I Wish (Kiseki)”

Dir: Hirokazu Kore-Eda, Japan, 2011, 127 mins, Cert: CLUB, Language Japanese.

Starring: Koki Maeda, Oshirô Maeda, Kirin Kiki, Jô Odagiri.

This is a deeply considered Japanese family drama – moving, sometimes heartbreakingly sad, often mysterious. The film is about the powerful imperative of family unity, but also about the inevitability, and even desirability, of families finally disintegrating and allowing everyone involved a painful kind of freedom.  With their parents having split up, a miracle is longed for by two brothers – the warring parents have taken a child each.  I Wish is the moving and deeply satisfying work of a director who just keeps on getting better. – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Birr Film Club – “Come As You Are”

Dir: Geoffrey Enthoven, 115 mins, Cert: 15A, Language Dutch/French/Spanish.

Starring: Charlotte Timmers, Roos Van Vlaenderen, Robrecht Vanden Thoren.

Three guys in their twenties love wine and women, wine they have savoured abundantly, but they have never had a woman.  Under the guise of a wine tour they embark on a journey to Spain hoping to get laid.  Nothing will stop them.  Not even their disabilities: one is blind, the other is confined to a wheelchair and the third is completely paralysed.
While, Come as you Are introduces familiar characters the material is handled with verve; beautifully blending the side-splitting comic with the quiet moments of despair, without lapsing into condescension or caricature – Cork Film Festival, 2012.
