Na Fianna GAA Football Club Notes

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

After a disappointing opening round defeat Na Fianna Minor Footballers got their Championship campaign up and running with a win against neighbours St Vincents in their Round 2 meeting last Wednesday evening in Geashill on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-11. St Vincents opened the scoring with a point straight from the throw in but within a minute Na Fianna were off the mark with a goal when Niall Lynch sent in a high ball which was caught by Aaron Pierce on the edge of the square who burst clear of his marker and was then fouled by the keeper but still managed to flick the ball into the net. This was just the confidence booster Na Fianna needed and as they pushed on over the remainder of the half adding 7 points to which St Vincents replied with 5 points and so at the break Na Fianna were leading 1-07 to 0-06. Six mins into the second half Na Fianna struck for goal no 2 when Declan Byrne sent in a free from midfield which was caught by Jason Dunne in the clear in the square and he lobbed the ball over the keeper into the top corner of the net. Na Fianna then added the next 3 points in a row by the midpoint of the half and at this stage it appeared to be all wrapped up by Na Fianna but to their credit St Vincents didn’t give up and over the next 10 mins they came right back into it scoring 1-04 without reply to reduce their deficit to 3 points. Then 2 mins from end Na Fianna sealed it with a point from Ben Ridgeway. St Vincents did put over a free in the final min but this was to be just a consolation score as Na Fianna held on for the win.
