An Taisce congratulates Offaly as hundreds of clean-ups take place across the county for the 15th annual campaign

An Taisce’s National Spring Clean is coming to an end for another year and An Taisce has congratulated Offalyvolunteers once again for their hard work and dedication the campaign. National Spring Clean is Ireland’s largest anti-litter initiative and takes place throughout the month of April every year.

2013 was the 15th year of National Spring Clean and half a million volunteers took part, five times the number of volunteers who first joined the campaign in 1998, despite reduced resources. It is estimated that an impressive 2,000 tonnes of rubbish was collected this year from our streets, landscapes and coastlines. A multitude of organisations inOffaly, including Tidy Towns, residents’ associations, youth groups and environmental groups contributed to the campaign by dedicating their time and effort to benefit their local communities by organising a variety of clean-up events across the county.

Patricia Oliver, National Spring Clean Chairperson said, “The National Spring Clean is all about communities working together and after 15 years the same spirit and dedication is still alive in towns and villages across the country.  It’s truly inspiring to see more and more people come together and take part in the campaign each year.”

The National Spring Clean Campaign is organised by An Taisce and is funded by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and the Wrigley Company. It is also supported by Repak who supply colour coded refuse sacks for recycling the materials collected and Local Authorities who co-ordinate activity in their communities.
