Ballycumber Drama Groups production of Bernard Farrells’ hilarious play “Canaries”

A cold snap may be on the way but Ballycumber Amateur Drama Group are heating things up with their forthcoming production of Bernard Farrell’s “Canaries” which opens in Ballycumber Hall this weekend.

This year sees the largest cast yet for Ballycumber Drama Group and the group is currently under the direction of Chris Murphy. Chris has been on the Ballycumber stage for many years now, but this is his much-anticipated directorial debut!

With the decision taken to stage something modern, comical and refreshing, “Canaries” was a popular choice! It is a very Irish play about a very Irish group and audience members cannot help but recognise a few characters they have come across on their own holiday experiences. It is arguably Farrell’s funniest play with three Irish couples travelling to the Canaries on a package holiday in a bid to escape their everyday surroundings. Everyone arrives with an appetite for the sun, sea and sand but things soon start to go wrong, with hilarious consequences, as the weather isn’t what is expected and the holiday-makers end up having a holiday that they will never forget, but not necessarily for the right reasons!

“Canaries” relies heavily on the creativity of the cast and crew, and this year’s cast, under Chris’ direction, have really brought their characters to life. So come and enjoy the antics of Mike Hiney, Frances Doyle, Karen O’Meara, Brendan Robbins, Carol Robbins, Derek Claffey, Mark Molloy and Charlotte Molloy as you have never seen them before! Ballycumber Drama is delighted to also welcome Aiden Dunne, Martina Fanning, Padraig Seery and Siobhan Phelan to the stage this year!

“Canaries” will be performed on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th January in Ballycumber Hall at 8pm and in Tuar Ard, Moate, for four nights from Wednesday 30th January until Saturday 2nd February at 8.30pm. Tickets are €8/10.  Bookings for Tuar Ard can be arranged by contacting 0906482042. Further information can be obtained from the PRO on 0851058059.
