JUNIOR B HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
It was bitter disappointment for Raheen Hurlers who missed out on capturing silverware by losing out to Shamrocks
in the Junior B Championship Final last Sunday afternoon in O’Connor Park, Tullamore on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-07.
Shamrocks were quickest out of the blocks as they opened the scoring with the first 3 points inside 4 mins. Over the
next 10 mins Raheen settled into it getting off the mark with their first 3 points to draw level from Richie Reynolds,
Jason Hassett and Ciaran Direen. Shamrocks then added 2 more points and this is how it remained until stoppage time
when a break by Shamrocks saw the ball end up in the net but play was called back for a 20m free to Shamrocks and
Shane Cunningham struck his shot to the roof of the net. This saw Shamrocks go in at the break leading 1-05 to 0-
03. The early stages of the second half saw Raheen cut the deficit with a a point apiece from Eanna Direen and Ciaran
Direen but Shamrocks replied with a point of their own. On 11 mins Alan Heffernan struck for Shamrocks second goal
and at this stage it looked as if they would cruise home. To their credit Raheen were not going to lie down and 2 mins
later after having 2 shots saved the ball came to sub Brian Kennedy who blasted his shot to the net for Raheen’s first
goal. Within a minute a Raheen lineball taken by Ciaran Direen around the 45m line came in high to the square where
full forward Willie Stynes was on hand to flick it in the air first time straight to the net which cut the lead down to
just a point. Shamrocks pulled clear again with 3 more points in a row before Paddy Arnold struck a fine point from out
near halfway to keep Raheen in touch with just over 5 mins left. Raheen had a couple of late chances for an equalising
goal but could not get the finishing touch. Then on 30 mins Shane Cunningham sealed with Shamrocks final point
although in stoppage time Ciaran Direen sent over Raheen’s last point but Shamrocks held on to claim the win.
