INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

In what was probably their worst performance of the year Raheen Intermediate Footballers slumped to their 3rd successive defeat in the Championship going down to last year’s Junior champions Cappincur in Daingean last Tuesday week on a scoreline of 0-14 to 0-05.Incredibly considering the final score it was Raheen who opened the scoring with the first 2 points inside the opening min. It was 10 mins later when Raheen put over their next point by which time Cappincur had got off the mark with 3 points in a row.The remainder of the half only saw Cappincur add 2 more points and so at the break Cappincur led  by 0-05 to 0-03. Again it was Raheen who were first off the mark with the opening point of the second half but over the next 20 mins Cappincur took complete control landing 8 points without reply to seal the win before the sides finished out with a point apiece in the final 5 mins.

RAHEEN: Mark Byrne, Brian Corcoran, Niall Leavy, Mikey Keogh, Mick McMenamin, Liam Boland, Brian Crombie, Brian Kehoe (0-01), Mark Gorman, Paddy Arnold, Shane Carroll, Damien Arnold, Liam Gorman, Willie Stynes, Richie Reynolds (0-04).

JUNIOR B HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Raheen Hurlers made it 5 wins out 5 to secure top place in the group and go straight into the semi finals of the Junior B Championship as they dismissed the challenge of neighbours Gracefield last Saturday evening in Gracefield in the final final round of the group stage on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-07. Previous meeting between these 2 sides over the last few years have been tight low scoring affairs and this encounter proved to be no different. Both sides got off the mark with a point apiece inside the first 5 mins before Raheen went in front with a point on 10 mins and it would be another 10 mins before the next score arrived when Jason Hassett put over a 65 for Raheen. From the resultant puck out Raheen worked the ball straight back in and just outside the square Paddy Rigney laid it off to Keith Quinn who passed it high to Brian Kennedy and he pulled on it first time to bury it in the net for Raheen’s goal. This was the break Raheen needed and for the remainder of the half they tagged on another 4 points to Gracefield’s 1. At the break Raheen held what appeared to be a comfortable lead of 1-07 to 0-02. Gracefield had the wind advantage in the second half and it proved to be decisive as they got back into it scoring 1-03 to Raheen’s 2 points inside the first 15 mins to cut the deficit to 4 points. This is how it remained until the last 5 mins when both sides tagged on another points apiece and then 2 mins into stoppage time Gracefield were given a 20m free which they went for goal but the shot went over the bar. Despite play going on for another 2-3 mins Gracefield could not work another score and so Raheen held on to claim the win.

RAHEEN: Eamon Direen, Craig O’Halloran, Eoghan Bolton, Fionan Direen, Brian Corcoran, Willie Stynes, Paddy Arnold, Niall Dempsey (0-01), Brian Kennedy (1-00), Eana Direen, Cathal Maher (0-01), Keith Quinn, Paddy Rigney (0-02), Jason Hassett (0-06), Ciaran Direen.

SUBS: Richie Reynolds (for Keith Quinn), Tony O’Toole (for Brian Kennedy).
