U21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Na Fianna U21 Footballers put in a powerful display to grab a win over Shamrocks in the 1st Round of the U21 Championship last Saturday evening in Mucklagh on a scoreline of 3-08 to 0-13 and in the process making it Na Fianna’s first win in the grade in over 10 years. Na Fianna opened the scoring with a pointed free from Richie Reynolds inside the first minute but for the next 20 minutes Shamrocks took control sending over 7 points without reply. Then with just over 5 min remaining in the half Na Fianna brought themselves right back into it with their first goal when Richie Reynolds sent in a high ball from out near the sideline, full forward Jason Darby shouldered his man out out of the way and when the ball landed in front of him he pulled on it to bury it in the net. Na Fianna added 2 more points before grabbing their second goal in the last minute when a 45 taken by Gavin Shiel was blocked down by the keeper and in the ensuing scramble Declan Byrne fired the ball into the net. Niall Dempsey then added a point for Na Fianna so at the break Na Fianna led by 2-04 to 0-07. Shamrocks started the second half well putting over the first 5 points without reply inside 10 mins to take a 2 point lead. Na Fianna hit back with 2 points to draw level. Then mid way through the half Na Fianna grabbed their 3rd goal when Richie Reynolds won the ball in midfield where he moved forward before laying it off to Niall Dempsey who worked his way in towards the square before passing it to Jack Keogh who blasted the ball to the top corner of the net. Na Fianna secured the win with their final 2 points from Michael James Pierce and Eric Dolan. Shamrocks put over a free in stoppage time for a consolation score but at that stage it was too little too late. Na Fianna now move on to the Quarter Finals.
