Grand Canal Art Project invites public input from Offaly

Can you help? – Offaly County Council recently held a public art competition, the subject and theme of which is the Grand Canal Corridor in Offaly from Edenderry to Shannon Harbour and three artists have recently been awarded commissions.
The project invites personal input from anyone who might have Grand Canal artefacts or stories or can make suggestions as to how/what community groups could be invited to participate. Please contact the artists below if you think you can contribute to any/all of the pieces There are three projects which will all run concurrently:
A Sound Art piece, from La Cosa Preziosa , http://www.lacosapreziosa.com/ ; a Visual Art series from Geraldine O Reilly http://www.geraldineoreilly.net/ , and a Film Documentary from Martina McGlynn, http://www.mixedbagmedia.com .

An open information event is planned from Thursday 8 th December, in the Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society, from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm.

Members of the public are invited to drop in to discuss any knowledge you have about the Grand Canal in Offaly. Please feel free to bring any old artefacts of Canal heritage with you, and if you permit, these may be photographed for possible use in the projects.

The project is particularly keen to learn from all of you who have various family or hobby links with the Grand Canal in Offaly. As you know, it was originally a trading route for goods and services on barges; and as well as modern day boating and heritage appreciation, it is also used by anglers, walkers, cyclists, canoers, rowers, historians, tourists and many more who appreciate this section of the inland waterways of Ireland.

Please drop in to OHAS on 8 th December, from on 3.30 pm– 6.30 pm with some of your material. If you would like to contribute at a later date or would like general information on what sort of information or items may be suitable for inclusion in each of the projects, please contact Sinéad O’Reilly, Arts Officer, Offaly County Council; arts@offalycoco.ie; ph: 057 9354700
