INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL

Raheen Intermediate Footballers grabbed a place in the Championship Semi-Finals for the second sucessive year but were pushed all the way by last year’s beaten finalists Durrow in their Quarter-Final meeting last Sunday evening in Killeigh including into extra time before eventually coming through on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-16. Durrow were first off the mark with a pointed free  inside the first minute. Raheen then got going first with 2 points and then getting through to score their first goal on the 10 minute mark when a break from inside their own half saw the ball worked through a number of players then taken by the Raheen man about 30m out who turned one way then the other before bursting his way in to bury the ball past the keeper and into the net. The remainder of the half saw both sides put over 4 points apiece and so at the break Raheen led by 1-06 to 0-05. Durrow got off to a flyer in the second half as they rattled off 3 points in a row inside the first 2 mins but Raheen wiped out the advantage with 3 points of their own by the 10th miin mark. The next 5 mins saw both sides add another point each but amazingly this proved to be Raheen’s last score of the half and in the remaining 15 mins Durrow gradually clawed their way back into getting the 4 points they needed to draw level. Raheen had a chance to win it in stoppage time with a 45 but it dropped short and the full time whistle was blown with the scores tied at 1-10 to 0-13. The draw meant extra time was required and in the first half of extra time both sides managed just 1 point apiece. In the early stages of the second half of extra time Durrow put over 2 points to open up a 2 point advantage but with 3 mins left Raheen put over a free to leave just a point in it. Then a minute later came the dramatic finish, Raheen won a free out near the sideline which they lobbed into the square where it was parried by the keeper and the scramble that followed a Raheen man managed to get his hand to it and bury the ball in the top corner of the net for Raheen’s second goal and a 2 point lead which they held onto and claimed the win.
