DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Raheen Intermediate Footballers put in a much improved performance in their second outing of their Division 1 League campaign on Monday night of last week in Croghan as they ran St Brigids all the way with St Brigids just shading it by the minimum margin on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-10. The opening 10 minutes saw St Brigids get out of the blocks quickest as they got off the mark with the first 4 points before Raheen opened their account with 2 points. The turning point of the game came in the 12th minute when St Brigids broke straight upfield from inside their own box and dispatched the ball to the net for the only goal followed immediately by a point. The remainder of the half saw Raheen come back with 3 points as the Croghan men added just 1 point and so at the break St Brigids led by 1-06 to 0-05. In the second half Raheen slowly ground down the defecit as they added another 5 points and held St Brigids to just 2 points which brought the lead down to the single point and Raheen were very unfortunate with number of shots late on which went narrowly wide that could have seen Raheen draw or win the game. Particular credit must go to all the young players on the Raheen team who all gave an excellent display giving plenty of optimism for the future.

Last Friday evening in Geashill Raheen’s Intermediate Footballers were up against Tullamore Senior’s in their latest Div 1 league encounter and despite Raheen putting it up to their more experienced opponents in the first half it was Tullamore who claimed the points on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-09. The opening 10 minutes saw Tullamore open the scoring with the first point before Raheen got off the mark with their opening 2 points to go in front but Raheen would later rue the about 10 chances over the next 10 minutes none of which they converted which would have made a difference in the result of the game. The remainder of the half saw Raheen add another point before Tullamore hit back with 5 points without reply in a 5 minute spell and Raheen added a pointed free for the final score of the half. This saw Tullamore go into the break with a slender lead 0-06 to 0-04. The opening 20 minutes of the second half saw Tullamore pull clear and seal the win as they tagged on 1-08 to just a single point reply from Raheen. In the final 10 minutes Raheen did manage to compose themselves as they outscored their opponents by 4 points to 2 but it was just too much of a deficit to be made up as Tullamore held on to claim the win.

DIVISION 4 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Raheen Junior Footballers had to settle for a draw against Durrow in Durrow last Sunday morning in the second outing in the Div 4 league campaign on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-13 to follow up the opening round win over St Brigids. The opening half saw Raheen playing with the wind advantage build up a  slender lead with 6 points from Martin Nugent, Noel Gorman (3) and Eoghan Bolton (2) with Durrow scoring 5 points and so at the break Raheen led by just the minimum margin. The opening 10 minutes of the second half saw Durrow go in front with 3 points as Raheen replied with a pointed free from Eoghan Bolton. Then in the 11th minute Raheen turned the game in their favour with the only goal when Brian Crombie took a pass from Noel Gorman out around the 45 and moved forward before laying off a pass to the just introduced Jack Keogh in the square who rounded the keeper to dispatch the ball to the net which put Raheen 2 points up. Thereafter for the remainder of the half Raheen added 3 more points all from placed balls from Richie Reynolds and Eoghan Bolton (2) but Durrow put over 5 points to salvage the draw with the final score coming 3 minutes into stoppage time.
