Irish Homeowners Urged to Protect Against Power Outages as Storms Surge Through 2025

Cork based Wizer Energy highlights the benefits of solar and battery storage in response to Ireland’s increasing extreme weather events

Irish Homeowners Urged to Protect Against Power Outages as Storms Surge Through 2025With Ireland experiencing 14 named storms in 2024 and 2025 already off to a dramatic start with Storm Éowyn, households across the country are facing an ever increasing risk of power outages. In the aftermath of Storm Éowyn, around 768’000 homes, farms and businesses lost power, and unfortunately the trend is set to continue, raising serious concerns about energy security for homeowners.

The Solar Solution?

“Severe storms and rising energy costs are no longer a ‘what if’ scenario; they are a reality,” says Martin Desmond, Managing Director at Wizer Energy. “Households across Ireland are now really feeling the effects of unstable power grids and increasing energy prices. Why it may not be the solution to all problems, a Solar PV system with battery storage means homeowners can take back a bit more control over their energy security, whilst saving some money in the long run.”

Homeowners, particularly those in storm-prone areas like the West of Ireland, are being urged to act now before the next large wave of storms hits. Investing in solar is no longer just about sustainability, it is about securing a reliable power source and future-proofing homes against rising energy costs.

The Financials

What about barriers to entry? Well, with various government grants available, things may be far more affordable than you think.

A typical a 4kWh system can save €1200 per annum, with an initial cost of about €7500 and a grant of €1800 from SEAI this puts the cost somewhere about €5500 for that system, saving €1200 per annum, hence full payback within 5 years. Pair the panels with a battery and you’re significantly reducing reliance on the national grid while cutting energy costs.

There is a common misconception in the industry that when the national grid fails that it’s only the battery power in your PV system that can be used, but this is incorrect! When our clients want to use their system to power their home when the grid is down, it’s the combination of the panels and battery that they have to use for this, which provides power day to day while the grid is down for an extended period, as we saw in January.

A Growing Concern for Irish Homeowners

Recent warnings from Met Éireann highlight the growing impact of climate change on Ireland’s weather patterns. The national forecaster has projected that Ireland will face increased storm surges, more frequent heatwaves and heavier rainfall in the coming years, heightening the risk of power disruptions. According to a report from The Sun, Met Éireann has warned of the increasing likelihood of “compound events,” such as storm surges coinciding with high tides and intense rainfall, leading to coastal and inland flooding.

As extreme weather events become more frequent, Wizer Energy is urging homeowners to consider solar panels and battery storage as a cost-effective and resilient solution to rising energy disruptions.
