INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP – ROUND 1

Raheen Intermediate Footballers opened their 2014 Intermediate Championship campaign with a comprehensive Rd 1 win over Rhode last Sunday morning in Ballyfore on a scoreline of 2-17 to 1-04 with a blistering second half display. Both sides got off the mark with a point apiece before Raheen struck for their first goal on 7 mins when Richie Reynolds high ball in from the corner was met by Conor Dunne who jumped with the keeper to punch it to the net. Raheen then added 3 points to Rhode’s 2 before Rhode got right back into it with a goal of their own 2 mins into stoppage time but their was still time for Raheen to reply with another point and so at the break Raheen were only just leading by 1-05 to 1-03. The second half was a completely different affair as after making a number of changes Raheen were a transformed team as they steamrolled through Rhode firstly adding 3 points before striking the killer blow on 17 mins when the recently introduced sub Dylan Hyland into his first game of adult football with one of his first touches took a pass from John Crombie on the edge of the square before planting his shot in the top right corner of the net for goal no 2. Rhode replied with a pointed free which would prove to be their only score of the second half before Raheen wrapped it up in the final 10 mins with an exhibition in point scoring as they completed their tally with 9 points in a row to give Raheen their first Rd 1 Championship win since 2010.
