INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL
Raheen Intermediate Footballers were knocked out of the Championship at the Semi-Final stage by Rhode last Saturday evening in O’Connor Park Tullamore on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-05, the same stage as last year but this time we can have no complaints as Rhode were the better team on the day from start to finish. Rhode got going straight from the throw in opening the scoring with the first 3 points before Raheen got off the mark with a 20m free from Richie Reynolds in the 4th minute. Rhode added 2 more points before the decisive moment of the game came midway through the half when Rhode were awarded a penalty which they dispatched to the right corner of the net. Raheen now faced a serious uphill battle and they responded by scoring 2 points within the space of minute from Shane Carroll and Richie Reynolds but Rhode added another point in the final minute which saw Rhode go in at the break with a comfortable lead of 1-07 to 0-03. Raheen started the second half a little better and got the first score with a pointed free from John Crombie in the 2nd min. Any hope of a comeback though was wiped out as Rhode tagged on the next 4 points before Richie Reynolds put over what would prove to Raheen’s final point midway through the half. Rhode added just 1 more point then with 3 mins left Raheen won a free on the 45m line that Padraig Bracken sent into the square and following a scramble Liam Guinan found the room to fire the ball into the net but the goal at this late stage would only be a consolation score. Rhode now move on to the final where they will await the winners of next weekend’s other semi final between St Brigids and Clonbullogue while Raheen will regroup again next year to mount another assault on the Intermediate Championship.
