Lore and Laughter with Bord na Móna at The Lough Boora Parklands for National Heritage Week
As part of National Heritage Week, Bord na Móna will host a special ‘Lore and Laughter in the Parklands’ event in the picturesque location of The Lough Boora Parklands in Co. Offaly on Saturday, 20th August 2011. The event coincides with the beginning of this year’s National Heritage Week and is also the first ‘National Tell Tale Day’ which focuses on the great Irish tradition of story-telling. ‘Lore and Laughter in the Parklands’ will boast a wide variety of activities for all ages and is the perfect way for families to mark the end of the summer holidays just before the kids head back to school.
This free and fun-filled family event, takes place from 12.00pm until 5.00pm and activities on offer include fishing – the lake will be stocked with fresh fish for the day – face painting, zorbing, interactive nature trails led by Bord na Móna’s ecologists and bike hire. Of course, one of the key attractions on the day will be the age old Irish pastime of storytelling to celebrate ‘National Tell Tale Day’. On the day, visitors can listen to and join in with tales from Story Bear, an interactive and intimate storytelling experience for kids, where they are invited to draw or write a story after the tales are told. Story Bear also provides a ‘magic carpet’ to seat the children on the day, with characters from the puppet theatre will encourage families to tell stories that have particular meaning to their lives
Speaking on behalf of Bord na Móna, Gerry O’Hagan, Group Director Marketing & Communications says “We are delighted to support National Heritage Week which promotes Ireland’s natural and cultural heritage thereby complementing Bord na Móna’s ‘contract with nature’ philosophy. This year’s event at Lough Boora showcases our magnificent parklands in Co. Offaly and we are looking forward to hearing some of the stories that the visitors will share on ‘National Tell Tale Day’. It is a great opportunity for locals, as well as new visitors, to see this beautiful outdoor facility.”
Just off the N52 Tullamore to Birr Road, the Lough Boora Parklands are owned by Bord na Móna and demonstrate the company’s commitment to long-term environmental concerns, bio-diversity and its ‘contract with nature’ philosophy. The parklands consist of a magnificent collection of natural and man-made lakes, along with 50km of walkways and pastureland that provide a new habitat for flora and fauna.
