Na Fianna GAA Football Club Notes 12th July
MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL
Na Fianna Minor Footballers were agonisingly beaten by neighbours St Vincents in a very dramatic Minor Football League Semi-Final in Mucklagh last Tuesday week by the slimmest of margins after extra time on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-17. The first half was a tight affair as points for Na Fianna from Dean Cahill (2), Jack Keogh and Brian Crombie saw them trail at half time by just 0-05 to 0-04. In the second half St Vincents pulled clear as they tagged on another 7 points to which Na Fianna replied with 5 points from Dean Cahill (3), Gary Martin and Richie Reynolds. As the game went into injury time St Vincents were holding on to a 3 point lead but Na Fianna never gave up and their persistence paid off when a quick break down the field saw the ball come to Richie Reynolds just outside the box who ran in and laid it off to Gary Martin almost on the goal line and he stuck out his fist to blast the ball to the net which drew the sides level and almost immediately the ref blew for full time. This forced the game into extra time and in the first period of extra time St Vincents pulled ahead again hitting over 3 points without reply. In the second period of extra time Na Fianna again showed their fighting spirit as they amazingly managed to draw level by the 7th minute as they shot over 4 points from Dean Cahill, Gary Martin, Niall Dempsey and Jack Keogh with just a single point reply from St Vincents. Then in the final minute St Vincents won a free midway between the 45 and 21 which they just managed to put over to snatch the win and the place in the final.
