Na Fianna GAA Club Notes
U16 FOOTBALL LEINSTER CLUB LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
Na Fianna U16 Footballers got their 2011 playing campaign off to an impressive start with a resounding win over The Downs from Mullingar in Westmeath in the first round of the inaugural Leinster Club League Tournament last Saturday evening in Geashill on a scoreline of 6-06 to 1-03. Na Fianna completely dominated the first half which saw them chalk up the first goal in the 10th minute when Shane Hyland took a pass in midfield and soloed through right into the square and laid it off to Fergus Flood to tap into the net. This was followed 4 minutes later by the second goal when Conor Leen from the corner of the square lobbed the ball over the head of the keeper to the top corner of the net. Na Fianna then added 2 points before shooting their 3rd goal in the 23rd minute when a shot from Mikey Pender came off the keeper and into the net. The remainder of the half saw The Downs get off the mark with a pointed free but this was cancelled out with another Na Fianna point and so at the break Na Fianna held a comfortable 3-04 to 0-01 lead. At the start of the second half Na Fianna introduced their full compliment of subs but it did not hinder them in any way as within the first 10 minutes they had tagged on another 2-01, with Conor Leen dispatching his second goal of the game and Shane Hyland getting the other goal when he followed up to blast the ball to the net after his first shot was blocked by the keeper. Both sides then added a point apiece before Na Fianna completed their scoring in the 17th minute with their 6th goal when Fintan Pierce won the ball just outside the square and laid it off to the in-running Mikey Keogh to shoot to the top corner of the net. At this stage the game was well over as a contest and while in the remaining minutes got in to score 1-01 these were just consolation scores.
