2011 TOM NAUGHTON U8 INDOOR HURLING REPORT – Round 3
CLASHAWAUN V AUGHAMORE
In the first game of the night Aughamore claimed their second win of the league in a hard fought battle against a spirited Clashawaun team. With the teams level 2-2 at half time this was going to be tight all the way with Aughamore just about shading it 7-5 in the end. Jake Colleran gave Aughamore an early lead which was quickly cancelled out by a blistering James Dunne goal for Clashawaun. Barry Egan and Neil Robbins then exchanged goals during the remaining of a very tight first half. JP Taylor was rock solid in goal for Clashawaun throughout and was ably assisted by John Guilfoyle and Darragh McKeon in front of him. Aaron Wynne and Shane Rabbitte played with great determination for Aughamore to keep their team in with a fighting chance in the second half. Neil Robbins continued to bang in the goals for Aughamore in the second half but likewise Cian Fleming had the golden touch for Clashawaun matching Robbins goal for goal. The difference between the teams in the end was down to the outstanding Ben Kennedy in goal for Aughamore. Time after time he denied Clashawaun with a string of brilliant saves. And in times of need the excellent Cian Cornally and the rock solid Greg Byrne was there to thwart the Clashawaun efforts. Christian McKeon gave everything for his Clashawaun team in the second half and with team-mates Egan, Dunne and Fleming battling for every ball it was always going to go down to the wire. In the end Colleran sealed it for Aughamore with a brilliant goal to give them the 7-5 victory.
BALLINOUGH V KILBRIDE
The second match of the night was also a very tight affair which saw Ballinough finally lose out to a very determined Kilbride team on a score-line of 8-6. The first half was very close with Marcus Dalton in blistering form for Ballinough, cracking in 3 great goals. Behind him Oran Meehan was simply brilliant in goal and Conor Doyle was outstanding in defence, chipping in with a magnificent goal too! For Kilbride, Conor Taylor was excellent in defence and James Kelly was working hard in midfield. Alex Cornally and Matthew Fleming were also in great form grabbing a couple of goals each to leave the sides level at 4-4 at half time. With Cornally and Fleming claiming another two goals each in the second half Kilbride started to get on top. Evan Cronin in goal was also outstanding and denied Ballinough time and again. But the battling boars of Ballinough weren’t giving up easily and Dalton fired in a few of his own to keep them in it. Tommie Bracken and James Cullen were battling hard in midfield and Kevin Minnock and Brendan Greene were also causing all sorts of problems for the Kilbride defence. In the end it was Kilbride who held on for the 8-6 win to maintain their unbeaten record in this year’s league.
KILCOURSEY V WOODFIELD
The final match of the night was yet another hard fought, close encounter which saw Kilcoursey edge out a magnificent Woodfield team on a score-line of 8-6. Two goals in the opening half from Dominic Scully got Woodfield off to a great start but they were quickly cancelled by two from Eoin Gavin of Kilcoursey, before a great strike from Luke Bracken gave Woodfield the lead again. An unfortunate own-goal off the stick of Jack Butler gave Kilbride a 4-2 lead at half time. For Kilbride, Niall Rooney in defence was having a brilliant game and likewise Brian Hogan and Eoin Scanlon who were working their socks off. For Kilcoursey, Keelin Conroy was once again giving an exhibition in goal and David Sheridan was excellent in defence. Kevin O’Keeffe was hurling brilliantly up front so Kilcoursey were always in with a shout. The second half started with Kilcoursey quickly getting back on level terms with a pair of goals from Gavin. But the outstanding Blake Ryan fought back for Woodfield and soon had his team back in front. But then Jamie Rowan and Jack Butler got on top in defence for Kilcoursey putting an end to the Woodfield scoring spree. And with Conroy now playing out of his skin in midfield for Kilcoursey this years leading goal-scorer Gavin rattled in four unanswered goals to give the Kilcoursey men the slightest of victories.
