Raheen Hurlers finally got their playing campaign underway for this year last Wednesday evening in Geashill with their opening game in the Div 3 League against neighbours Killeigh and in a low scoring but entertaining encounter both sides were left to settle for a draw on a scoreline of 0-06 to 0-06. The opening half saw Raheen put 4 points on the board including 3 frees from Paddy Rigney and 1 from play from Michael James Pierce to which Killeigh replied with 3 points and so at the break Raheen led by just the minimum. Killeigh drew level and went in front inside the first 5 mins of the second half before Raheen came back with 2 points of their own over the next 20 mins from Jason Hasset and Paddy Rigney to re-take the lead. In the last few minutes Raheen were kept in the game by a couple of fine saves from keeper Padraig Direen. Then 3 minutes into stoppage time Killeigh won a simple free about 40m out in front of the posts which they duly converted to draws level after which the full time whistle went.

Raheen Junior Footballers suffered their second defeat of their Div 4 League campaign against neighbours Walsh Island in Walsh Island last Sunday morning on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-11. In the opening 20 minutes Walsh Island built up a slender lead of 4 points to 3. Then in the 25th minute Raheen went in front with their goal when Colin McHugh dispossessed his man out on the sidelline and sent in pass where it was won by Jason Floody on the edge of the square who shot first time to the corner of the net. Walsh Island added a point then on the stroke of half time a break downfield saw them finish the ball to the for their first goal. This saw Walsh Island lead at the break by 1-05 to 1-03. After 25 minutes of the second half Walsh Island had added another 5 points but Raheen had put over 6 points from Colin McHugh, Keith Quinn, Eoghan Bolton, Martin Nugent and Darren Monagher (2) which reduced the defecit back to a single point but a minute later Walsh Island sealed the win when a mix up in the box saw the ball finished to the net for their second goal. Raheen did finish with another 2 points from Colin McHugh but it was not enough and Walsh Island held on to claim the win.

Raheen Intermediate Footballers recent winning run was ended by Shamrocks in Geashill last Monday evening in their latest Div 1 League encounter on a scoreline of 2-07 to 1-11 but not before a remarkable recovery which did not look to be on the cards after the first 15 mins as Shamrocks got off to a flyer putting 1-07 on the board without reply. Raheen did get off the mark with 2 points before half time and so at the break Shamrocks led by 1-07 to 0-02. The opening 15 mins of the second half saw the fightback begin as Raheen put over 4 points to Shamrocks 2. Over the next 10 mins Raheen were awarded 2 penalties both of which were coolly blasted to the net for Raheen’s 2 goals, either side of a single Shamrocks point which cut the deficit down to a single point.  The remaining minutes of the game saw both sides add just 1 more point apiece and try as they might Raheen just could not force the equaliser as Shamrocks held on to claim the win.
