Na Fianna GAA Football Club Notes


Na Fianna U16 footballers were looking to follow up their opening round win the previous weekend when they travelled to Castlepollard on Saturday last to take on St Michael’s of Westmeath in their second round encounter of the Leinster Club League Tournament. In a close and exciting encounter Na Fianna gave a great and spirited performance, only to lose by just one point 2-9 to 3-5.

NA FIANNA: Fintan Pierce, Aaran Pierce, James Lalor, Jamie Conroy, Kevin Beirne, Niall Lynch, Mark McNally, Declan Byrne, Mikey Keogh, Barry Daly (0-01), Ibrahim Afalobi (0-01), Shane Hyland, Conor Leen (2-01), Fergus Flood, Ryan Guinan.

Subs that all played their part: Shane Dolan (0-01), Ben Dunne, Darren O’Brien (0-1), Michael Leogue, Darragh Murphy and Mickey Feery.


Na Fianna Minor Footballers got their playing campaign for this year under way last Sunday as they put in a very spirited performance and battled all the way in their opening game of the new Minor Football League against one of the competition favourites Ferbane / Belmont in Geashill but it was Ferbane / Belmont who claimed the win on a scoreline of 3-06 to 1-07. Na Fianna who had just the bare 15 players showed that they would be no pushover and after 15 minutes Na Fianna trailed by just 3 points to 2 with Niall Dempsey and Richie Reynolds getting the Na Fianna scores. In the 18th minute Ferbane / Belmont got a huge piece of good fortune in scoring the first goal when a shot came off the upright into the hands of the forward who shot to the net. Gary Martin replied immediately with a point for Na Fianna but Ferbane / Belmont added 2 more points before the break to go in at half time leading by 1-05 to 0-03.Na Fianna were first off the mark in the second half with a point from Niall Dempsey. Then both sides swapped goals, Ferbane / Belmont were first in the 9th minute when an attempted clearance was blocked down and dribbled into the net before Na Fianna hit back with their only goal 2 minutes later when Jason Darby shot the ball high into the square where Gary Martin jumped 1 on 1 with the keeper to flick the ball to the net. Na Fianna then added 2 more points from Aaron Dwane replied to by a single point for F/B. Then 2 minutes from the end Ferbane / Belmont sealed the win with their 3rd goal when they broke downfield where the ball was taken by the forward in the clear on the 21 to run in and shoot the net. Na Fianna completed the scoring with the final point in the last minute from Aaron Pierce but this proved to be just a consolation score.

Na Fianna U16 Footballers will be looking to make 2 wins out of 3 in the Leinster Club League Tournament in their final Group fixture when they travel to take on North Meath Gaels of Meath in  Drumconrath, Meath  on this Saturday (19th March) at 4:00pm . Na Fianna U6, U8 & U10 Football Training begins for this year on Thursday 14 APRIL between 6 and 7pm in Geashill with Registration taking place at the training. All boys and girls in these age categories interested in playing football are invited to attend.


Membership for club players has been fixed for the coming year at €15 for the first child and €10 for the second and subsequent child from each family. Membership can be paid to the relevant team managers when training re-commences.
