National Heritage Week

Local Independent County Councillor, Martin Lonergan has welcomed the beginning of Heritage Week, 2015.

“Heritage Week is a week long celebration of natural, artistic and built Heritage of Ireland during which many local and national heritage organisations hold special events throughout the country and which take place from 22nd to the 30th August,” commented Cllr. Lonergan.

“Events cover a wide range of interests, with everything from fair to wildlife tours and lectures to music recitals, historical re-enactments to outdoor activities all included.

Many heritage sites in Clonmel Borough District will offer free admission or special concessions during the week including, free admittance to Cahir Castle and Guided Tours, a demonstration of stone carving and cast ironwork at the Swiss Cottage, Cahir, Premier Discoveries from County Tipperary in the County Museum in Clonmel and the Big Dig taking place in the Showgrounds Shopping Centre, Clonmel to name but a few.

Heritage, arts and culture is a unique sector, not just in its employment-creation potential but in the sustainability of such employment, and indeed, what it generates for local communities and economies across the District. This year, the Heritage Council invites us to examine our past through the unique lens of our Industrial Heritage. It is a perfect opportunity to find out more about this fascinating, but often neglected aspect of our past.

Heritage Week encourages people to become actively involved in the safeguard and enhancement of their local heritage for present and future generations. Further details of events are available on Tipperary County Council website along with the Heritage Councils website.

Concluding Cllr. Lonergan added, “Our heritage plays such an important role in contributing to a local sense of place and to the distinctiveness of our country. It is our communities, big and small, that are the custodians of our local heritage and who will pass on traditions and knowledge to the next generation.”
