Applications are open for national scheme to help older people to get active

The Go for Life Small Grant Scheme for Sport and Physical Activity for older people is now open. The scheme is aimed at encouraging older people to get active and is used by groups and clubs all over Ireland to buy equipment, run sports events or try new activities. Last year over 1,000 groups and organisations availed of this opportunity. Each grant awarded this year will be between €250 and €700.

Last year 23 groups from County Offaly received Go for Life Grants

‘Last year we applied for Go for Life grant and we were delighted to receive it. We spent it to organise few local Go for Life Games and purchase a parachute. This year we are again going to apply and we encourage other groups to do the same’ said Rita Davis from Tullamore Active Retirement Association.

The Small Grant Scheme is a joint initiative between Age & Opportunity’s Go for Life programmeand the Irish Sports Council. Now in its fourteenth year, it has, so far, awarded over €4.2 million in nearly 9,000 grants. This year, €300,000 will be allocated to groups and clubs all over Ireland.

The closing date for applications is Friday, 26 September 2014.  Application forms are available on the Age & Opportunity website www.ageandopportunity.ie or from the Go for Life office on 01 805 7733.
