Fragments of Home
Orlagh M Murphy
Orlagh M. Murphy began her career as an illustrator who then went on to work as a decorative and mural artist for architects and interior designers in Ireland, USA, Japan and throughout Ireland.  Now concentrating on her studio based practice, this current exhibition has been inspired by our idea of home and what we remember of the place that has coloured who we are today.  Having spoken to numerous people about their memories of home; Orlagh worked on a series of paintings and collages of various items and interiors that all had the power of recalling a moment in time.  This is her first solo show.

Death of a Salesman
Birr Stage Guild
One of the most acclaimed American plays of the 20th century, this play is comprised primarily of flashbacks chronicling the downfall of a sixty-three year old man struggling to keep his career alive.  The script is a relentless, melancholy exercise in the American Dream gone terribly wrong.  Playwright Arthur Miller has crafted an intricate narrative that defies the laws of naturalism by skilfully writing scenes that move seamlessly in and out of dialogue depicting family drama, corporate greed and the escalating dementia of the title character.

Dir: Pedro Almodovar, 90 mins, Cert: 16, Language: Spanish.
Starring: Antonio de la Torre, Hugh Silva, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Laya Marti, Javier Camara.
A Spanish airline flight is heading for Mexico City but it’s landing gear is crocked so the pilots circle over Spain leaving an enthusiastically camp trio of male cabin attendants to entertain the handful of business class travellers.  That the passengers in economy have been drugged into slumber is just one indication that Almodovar is also aiming at a bitter metaphor for his homeland’s recent scandalous financial downturn.  Riotously naughty, but far from empty-headed, this film is another must-see, graced by generous cameo from old favourites Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz.
