Ladies Gaelic Football Returns to Their Birthplace

On the 18th July the Ladies Gaelic Football Association returned to Hayes Hotel, Thurles to celebrate the anniversary of their foundation.  Ten members of the original committee were present on the night, three of these are Tipperary Ladies, Sally Duggan (Clohessy), Ann Slattery (Clohessy) and Biddy Ryan.  It was at this meeting that Clonmel man, Jim Kennedy was elected the first President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association.  A great night was had by all with lots of memories and renewed friendships.

The first Championship in 1974 had eight counties in it, Roscommon, Laois, Galway, Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Offaly and Tipperary.  Tipperary claimed the first ever title when they defeated Offaly on a score line of 2-3 to 2-2.  Agnes O’Gorman, losing captain presented the winning captain, Kitty Ryan with the Brendan Martin Cup.

This year Ladies Gaelic Football celebrates the 40th Ladies All Ireland Senior Football Championship in Croke Park on September 29th.  As part of the celebrations of the 40th All Ireland Championship, every player that has ever contested a Senior, Junior or Intermediate final are being invited to return to Croke Park to take part in the celebrations.  In order to do this we need to get in touch with every player, anyone with contact details for these players can email ladiesfootballtipperary@gmail.com or contact a County Board Officer.
