Blackout of Massive Opposition to Property Tax and of National Protest March in Dublin this Saturday as Mainstream Media Acts Like PR Agents for Government/Revenue – Joe Higgins TD

“Thousands of people have been attending public meetings and protests against the Property Tax all over  the country. A major National Protest march is set for 12.30pm this Saturday, April 13 in Dublin, proceeding to a rally outside Dublin Castle where EU Finance Ministers are meeting.

“However there has been up to now an effective blackout in the mainstream media of all these developments. The voice of the huge opposition to this new austerity attack is denied a hearing on the national airwaves and major newspapers. By contrast most of the mainstream media is acting like a PR Agent for the Government and Revenue, faithfully reporting every pronouncement and warning from these quarters that people  ‘have no choice’ but to comply.

“When political comment is sought on the Property Tax and Water Charges, it is to the soft, verbal objections of  Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin only that the media turns, sidelining the significant number of Councillors and TDs who are supporting the  organised campaign of opposition.

“An opinion poll found a huge majority of people opposed to the Property Tax and nearly one third declaring they would boycott it. It is beyond time that the voices of these taxpayers were given expression in opposition to the deluge of pro austerity propaganda in most of the media.”
