G.A.A CLUB NOTES

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

It’s 3 wins out of 3 in the Championship for Na Fianna Minor Footballers as they saw off the challenge of neighbours St Broughans in their 3rd round encounter last Monday week in Geashill but unlike their previous 2 games this was a much tighter affair with Na Fianna winning by 1-09 to 1-06. Na Fianna were first off the mark with a pointed free straight from the throw in. St Broughans then got off the mark on 5 mins with a goal when a 45m free was miscaught by the defender on the line and the ball slipped into the net. The remainder of the half saw Na Fianna add 4 points to St Broughan’s 2 points which left them level at the break 0-05 to 1-02. Na Fianna went in front with the first point of the second half before getting the decisive score on 7 mins when Richie Reynolds picked up a pass about 30m out and ran into the square before shooting past the keeper to the corner of the net for Na Fianna’s goal. Over the next 20 mins St Broughans hit over 2 points twice sandwiched either side of of 2 pointed frees for Na Fianna. Then in the final minute a fine point from Ben Ridgeway sealed the win for Na Fianna.

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Na Fianna Minor Footballers got their 2nd win in 3 days and their 4th out of 4 in the Championship as they came out on top in a tight tense affair against Rhode in the 4th round in Rhode last Wednesday evening by the minimum on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-13. The opening 15 mins of the first half saw both sides get off the mark with 3 points apiece, Richie Reynolds obliging for Na Fianna while Rory McNamee with the finishing touch for Rhode. Having earlier had what looked to be a good goal ruled out for a square ball Na Fianna did get to raise the green flag in the 20th min when Niall Dempsey coolly dispatched a penalty which was awarded when Richie Reynolds was upended. The remaining mins of the half saw Rhode tag on 4 points with Na Fianna replying with 3 points so at the break Na Fianna led by 1-06 to 0-07. The opening 15 mins of the second half was low scoring with Rhode adding just 2 points and Na Fianna 1. Then over the next 5 mins Na Fianna pulled clear with 4 points with just a single point reply from Rhode. This is how it remained until the last 5 mins as Rhode clawed it back in with 3 points in a row. Then in stoppage time Rhode were awarded a controversial free about 30m out in front of the posts to draw level but the shot went wide and Na Fianna held on to claim the win.
