MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Na Fianna Minor Footballers got their Championship campaign off to the perfect start with a well deserved opening round win over Shamrocks in Rahan last Wednesday evening on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-07. Shamrocks opened the scoring with the first point which would be the only time in the game that they would lead but Na Fianna replied immediately with their opening point. Then on 7 mins Na Fianna got in to score the only goal when Niall Dempsey took a quick free out around the 45 which was won by Aaron Pierce just outside the square who passed it to Mikey Pender on the end line and he rounded the keeper before burying the ball in the roof of the net. This gave Na Fianna the belief to push on and over the remainder of the half they tagged on 5 more points from Richie Reynolds (4) and Niall Dempsey with Shamrocks replying with just 2 pointed frees which gave Na Fianna a lead of 1-06 to 0-03 at the break. The opening 10 mins of the second half saw both sides send over 2 more points apiece. Then in the final 20 mins Na Fianna brought on a number of subs but it did not not impinge on their performance as they kept tagging on the scores with 4 more points all from Richie Reynolds to seal the win as Shamrocks could only manage another 2 points.
NA FIANNA: Adam Kinahan, Jonathan Byrne, Mikey Keogh, Dean Pierce, Matthew Hynes, James Lalor, Fergus Flood, Declan Byrne, Niall Dempsey (0-02), Aaron Pierce, Shane Hyland, Luke Dunne (0-01), Mikey Pender (1-00), Jason Dunn (0-01), Richie Reynolds (0-08).
