Music Workshops for All Ages at the Cloughjordan Festival

Cloughjordan Festival 2012 is delighted to announce a line up of fantastic quality music workshops for kids and adults that will take place over the 
5-day festival, from Wednesday 27 June to Sunday 1 July.

Sean nós Singing Workshop with Nora Butler

Weds 27 Jun and Thurs 28 Jun, 2pm- 4pm. €10/€15 both days.

Nora is a leading member of the Brú Ború entertainment group and has travelled the world. She is self taught, and her natural ability to phrase her singing gives her a unique style. The end product is a voice that has thrilled and delighted audiences across the globe and won her five All-Ireland titles. She has strong Comhaltas connections and currently teaches in the Pastoral Centre in Nenagh where she hosts a Rambling House session on the last Friday of each month. Nora’s grandparents are originally from Emill in Cloughjordan.

Banjo and Mandolin Workshops with Pádraig Heffernan

Beginner’s – Sat 30 Jun and Sun 1 Jul 10am-1pm; Advanced – Sat 30 Jun and Sun 1 Jul 3pm-6pm. Cost is €15 per day. To book a place, ring 087 0979087. Participants are welcome to do both days.

Pádraig has been playing the tenor banjo for over 10 years and is an accomplished musician who regularly performs in pubs, hotels and concert venues for a wide variety of audiences. He has successfully competed at Munster and All Ireland level and won numerous medals including Munster Fleadh Ceoil and Munster Ceoil an Geimhreadh. He has enjoyed teaching the banjo to students of all ages for the last five years and many have gone through to win solo competitions of their own.

Guitar Workshops with Seanie Hogan

Beginner’s – Sat 30 June and Sun 1 July, 10am-1pm, Django’s hostel library

Advanced – Sat 30 June and Sun 1 July 3pm-6pm. MacDonagh Hall.

Seanie Hogan is a well-known local multi-instrumentalist who is currently

working with Druid Theatre Company in Galway as an accompanist.

He is a member of Tipp Off, who played for President Obama on his visit to

Moneygall.

Drumming for Young Kids and Parents, Fri 29 June, 11am-noon, Parochial Hall  and Sat 30 June noon-1pm, The Meadow. €3 per child; parents free.

Drumming for Kids 8-12 Years, Sat 30 Jun 1.15pm-2.15pm. €3.

Drumming for Adults, Sat 30 Jun 2.30pm-4pm. €5.

Venue: The Meadow, Cloughjordan. No need to book.

Learn about the bass, tone and slap sound of the djembe drum, body percussion, and rhythm and polyrhythms for groups. Taught by professional music teachers Paddy O’Meara, Emma Smith, and Michelle Richardson-Hennessy. Instruments are provided or you are welcome to bring your own drum. No registration required, just turn up on the day.

Introduction to Tin Whistle for Kids

Wed 27 Jun and Thu 28 Jun 2pm-3pm. Free. Venue TBC.

This class is taught by Shay Hannon, who has been teaching tin whistle to children and adults for a number of years. Children will learn how to play a simple tune. Registration at 2pm each day. Bring your own tin whistle or buy one at the workshop.

Advanced Tin Whistle Workshop with Sean Ryan

Cashel native Seán Ryan is a fantastic exponent of the tin whistle who has toured extensively in Europe and America with a variety of musicians and dancers. He is renowned as one of Ireland’s best whistle players with a unique, very recognisable style that includes unusual tonguing techniques that produce phrasing reminiscent of fiddle bowing techniques.

John Spillane: Song-writing workshop

Sun 1 Jul 4pm-6pm. Django’s hostel library. Places are limited. To book a place, ring 087 0979087.

Songwriter, musician, recording artist, storyteller, and poet John Spillane is one of the most accomplished songwriters working in Ireland today. His songs have been covered by the likes of Christy Moore, Karen Casey, and Sharon Shannon. All participants will write a short lyric, juggle it into a song lyric, and sing their song.
