Na Fianna GAA Club Notes

U16 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Na Fianna U16 Footballers got back to winning ways in their Championship campaign as they came out on top against Rhode Og in Rhode last Monday week on a scoreline of 4-10 to 3-09. Rhode opened the scoring with a point straight from the throw in but Na Fianna got off the mark straight away with their first goal when a line ball was won on the edge of the square and shot to the corner of the net. Both sides registered a point apiece before Na Fianna finished their second goal midway through the half when a shot was spilled by the keeper and tapped into the net. Rhode then added 2 points to Na Fianna’s 1 point before Rhode were awarded a penalty in the final minute which they shot to the net. This left Na Fianna leading by the minimum at halftime 2-02 to 1-04. For the first 20 mins of the second half Na Fianna tagged on 5 more points but a tally of 1-04 for Rhode put them in front by 1. Then within the space of a minute Na Fianna turned the game completely in their favour as they broke through to score 2-01 and they sealed the win with their final 2 points from 45’s a few mins later. Rhode scored 1-01 in stoppage time but it was not enough and Na Fianna held on to claim the win.

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Na Fianna Minor Footballers lost out to a more superior side from St Vincents last Thursday evening in Geashill in the penultimate round of the group stage of the Championship on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-05. St Vincents were off the mark with a point straight from the throw in and by half time had built up a tally of 1-07 with Na Fianna just about keeping themselves in it with 3 points from Gavin Ridgeway, Gary Martin and Dean Cahill. The first 10 mins of the second half saw St Vincents first pull further ahead with 2 more points before Na Fianna replied with a pointed free from Jason Darby followed by the goal when Jason Darby won a high ball outside the square and found a clear run in on goal, rounding the keeper before he buried the ball in the net. This had the deficit down to 5 points but just 2 mins later came the game clincher when St Vincents got through to score their second goal. This killed the game as a contest and over the remaining 20 mins there were just 3 more points, 2 for St Vincents and 1 for Na Fianna from Jason Darby. Na Fianna must now win their final round game away to St Rynaghs to have any hope of making it through to the Quarter Finals.
