U16 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Na Fianna U16 Footballers opened their 2011 Championship campaign against Tullamore last Sunday evening in O’Brien Pk, Tullamore but it was Tullamore who claimed the win on a scoreline of 2-08 to 2-06. The early stages saw Tullamore get off the mark with the first point before Mikey Keogh got Na Fianna’s opening point. Then in the 12th minute Na Fianna went in front with the opening goal when Mikey Pender caught a high ball in the square, turned and blasted it past the keeper to the net. The remainder of the half saw Tullamore hit back with 4 points to which Na Fianna replied with 2 points from Conor Leen and Fergus Flood. This left Na Fianna holding a 1 point lead at the break 1-03 to 0-05 which they extended with a point from Barry Daly 3 minutes into the second half. The turning point of the game came over the next 10 mins as Tullamore got through to score 2-01 without reply but in the 17th minute Na Fianna gave themselves hope with their second goal when a high shot from Fergus Flood at least 30m out dipped in over the head of the keeper to the net. The following 5 mins saw both sides add 2 points apiece with the Na Fianna scores coming from Ben Ridgeway and Mikey Pender. These proved to be the final scores of the game but it was not the end of the drama when in the 27th min the Tullamore keeper received a straight red card for an off the ball incident.but try as they.
