DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Raheen Intermediate Footballers chalked up their first win of the year as they managed to see off the challenge of the previously unbeaten Tubber in Tubber last Friday evening in the latest round of the Division 1 League campaign on a scoreline of 1-09 to 0-08. The opening half saw both sides match one another stride for stride and after 25 minutes Tubber were just shading it as they led by 0-06 to 0-05. Then on the stroke of half time came the turning point of the game when first Raheen were awarded a penalty having had a man brought down in the box but the Tubber keeper managed to guess correctly to dive and deflect the ball from the spot kick out wide. From the resultant 45’ Raheen lobbed the ball into the square and amazingly the ball went all the way straight in over the head of the keeper to the back of the net for the only goal of the game. This enabled Raheen go in at the break leading by 1-05 to 0-06. Straight from the resumption Raheen fired over another point but Tubber replied immediately with their opening point of the second half. The next 20 minutes saw Raheen extend their lead by adding 3 more points to a single point reply from Tubber. This completed the scoring but in the last 5 minutes Raheen needed all their luck to pull off 2 brillant goal line clearances to deny Tubber getting a goal and so Raheen held on to claim the win.

Tubber opened the scoring with a pointed free in the 4th minute but Raheen got off the mark within a minute with a point from Niall Carthy and went in front in the 13th minute with a point from Paul Garry who suffered an injury in putting over the score and was forced off. The next 15 minutes saw Tubber put over 3 points to which Raheen replied with 2 points from Niall Leavy and Niall Carthy but in the 6 minutes of injury time played Tubber added 2 more points to go in at the break leading by 0-06 to 0-04. In the second half Tubber pulled clear as they shot over a further 8 points to seal the win as Raheen could only add another 2 points from Darren Monagher and Niall Leavy.
