Offaly prepares to Thrill The World in global record attempt to dance “Thriller”

Date:                  Saturday October 23rd, 10:30am for 11.00am “Thrill Time”

Venue:               Market Square, Tullamore, Co. Offaly
Preparations are underway to break a world record. Thrill the World is a worldwide record attempt for the Largest Simultaneous Dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”  Thousands of people in cities around the world will learn the Thriller dance and perform it precisely at the same time.  Here in Offaly that time is 11:00 GMT on October 23rd (the Saturday before Halloween) in Market Square, Tullamore. It’s free and all ages and abilities are welcome.

Thrill the World is a global celebration of the life and music of Michael Jackson for world records and charity. Now in its 4th year, Thrill The World’s participant numbers have grown from the initial 62 dancers in Toronto, Canada in 2006 which resulted in a Guinness World Record, to 22,596 people dancing in 32 countries in 2009.  142 zombies danced in Ferbane in 2007 and Michael Jackson was a “local” in 2006 when he lived in the Midlands for 4 months, so we have good reason to celebrate his music and dance.

The dance is easy to learn! Rehearsals with a dance instructor will run weekly at Joe Lee’s Bar, Church Street Tullamore at 8pm on Tuesdays. Local dance instructors are preparing to teach the dance in participating secondary schools, and instruction videos of the dance, broken down into easy steps can be seen at www.thrilltheworld.com/learn

You must register to count in the world record attempt, using the registration form printed in the Offaly Express, or online at www.carersireland.com/supportus – click on Thrill The World on the left.  Then it’s time to get your Zombie costume on as Offaly Thrills The World in Market Square at 11am on October 23rd.

Supported by CrystalSound, Joe Lee’s, Dezynamite, Aura Productions, Midlands 103 and the Offaly Express, Thrill The World Offaly is in aid of The Carers Association, a national voluntary body headquartered in Tullamore that helps people who care at home for loved ones who are elderly and frail, seriously ill, people with disabilities and children with special needs. Over 160,000 people in Ireland give care at home every day to somebody who needs their help.
